My bikram yoga journey

It's been 14 days since I last wrote here. I've been working with my body in a hot room since. It all started when my group of friends decided to take a Bikram Yoga trial at Pacific Plaza, and that first 90 minutes in the hot room felt great, at least for my first time. I remembered how I had to constantly look at the people in the mirror to correct my poses, I had trouble locking my knees and getting my proper compression head to knee poses. I was amazed at how a 90 minutes session could make me feel so at ease, and I wanted to know more. So I went home to read up more on Bikram, which made me inspired to do more of it.

Before I knew it, I signed myself up for a 10-days Bikram Yoga trial at Harbour Front Centre. It was the start of my motivated journey.

Here is the studio where I go for classes diligently for the next 10 days. It was a whole new environment and new instructors. There are 26 poses in Bikram in total, and reading Bikram Yoga Vancouver's site the night before made understanding these postures so much better. Day 1 was a lot of trying, locking of knees and pulling of my feet. It was where practice came in.

The 10 days I spent with my mind and body in the hot room was amazing. I had good and bad days; days when I feel lethargic, tired and periodic hunger pangs that attacked. But there were days that I felt strong and free. I came across reading "10 Things I Hate About Bikram Yoga" off the net and I thought it hit the nail on the spot. It was the addiction, the sweat, the heat, the posture and how it never ends. It was a 90 minute session that took my mind off school, work and everything else. It was a session of me.

It was truly rewarding and amazing. I loved it, and I'm willing to share. Any other new yogis out there? :)

  3. Sounds amazing! I've never heard of Bikram yoga before, but I've heard of the benefits of yoga in general. It's definitely something I'd like to try in the future, thanks for sharing your experience :)

    1. I hope you get to try it one day Becky! I never really fell in love with yoga on the whole until I tried Bikram. I went for a few other sessions of other types of Yoga like Hatha and Vinyasa, I still thought I loved Bikram best! You're welcome and it's my pleasure to share!

  4. Wow that does sound pretty amazing! Good for you for accomplishing such a wonderful journey! I've done yoga before but not bikram yoga. I did it for about a month but I just couldn't continue. Unfortunately after a while, it was hard to concentrate. So odd. Maybe it was the video I was following :)

    1. That's good Jane! At least you started, I guess we all have our firsts. Thing is, monthly memberships in Singapore are so expensive and we don't have no-frills yoga centres here and it's hard to do bikram at 40degrees in a hot room at home :(

    1. I had no idea what was the "sun salute" so I googled about it and landed on this page. Wow. I never knew yoga poses/ understood about their languages until I look them up/ too long to remember. I hope you enjoy them! :)

    1. My mom does zumba too! I've never done zumba but I know it's pretty fast-paced and it burns lots of calories as well! Maybe one day I might try zumba too!

    1. I didn't know they have yoga in wii style! That's a first to me! I take snacks all the time especially when I'm soooo hungry. But I always try to tell myself I worked hard for it... But it never happens.

  8. Wow, I'm impressed Jolene! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even hold up for 9 minutes, let only 90! Kudos to you. Must be so worth it too.

    1. Hi Ronnie! Initially I thought by 90 I'd really be flat on the mat. Instead it felt so good with the perspiration trickling down the neck, body, forehead... Everywhere :) Then I loved it subconsciously and it made me wanna go back for more :)

    1. Hi Marlen! It's good to see you here and it's great to hear that you've tried yoga for the first time! We all have our first and I remember my very first time too... And the feeling of accomplishment after yoga lingers for a while and you can't wait to try it for the second time again! Then third.. Forth... And forever :) I'm glad I could share this with all of you and you feeling the same way :) We are strong ourselves and our body is amazing.

  10. I've wanted to take yoga classes for quite some time, but I can't ever seem to make myself throw down the dollars when there are youtube videos a-plenty. Though, I will say, I would be much more inclined to participate more often if I were in a real, live class. And your post about it is so inspiring! I might just have to give it a shot now.
