First workout in a long time

It's been a long while since I managed to find some alone time to sit at my desk, clean up my almost worn-out macbook, and try to write a summary on my life in 2012. I can't seem to put the happy and the sad together into words; These 12 months I have done a wide-array of things that some I am extremely thankful about, and the beautiful (sometimes sad) memories I have with my dearest family, friends and Juju.

My gym membership ended in October, which I already hardly found time for as compared to the enthusiasm which held up earlier in 2012. Something bit me hard after being a coach potato and badly sunk in work for the past few months. I reviewed my work-out tumblr which I used to document during my healthier gym-fit days, and I was appalled at how disciplined I was at juggling both school, work and gym together. I am now disgusted with my current self.

I logged into Nike+ after 4 months last night, downloaded new energy songs and went for a run around my neighborhood last night. It wasn't the best run, but I felt great, and most importantly, I felt free. So I went into blogilates by Cassey, and did a short Long, Lean Dancer's Legs Pilates Workout after the run. It was awesome. It was a feeling that no one can take it away from you. And that was what I needed - To ignite the flame that once burned so bright.

Feel free to share with me your gym regimes, daily routines or even healthy meals that I might start curating over 2013 :) And I'm thankful how this blog has given me endless opportunities to express myself over the past 3 years. It is often that people walk in and out of our lives, but it is definitely up to us to garner strength and change it for the better. ♥ Have a happy new year!

Coming Soon

I aspire to be a multi-faceted web-designer one day. I love typography and enjoy being a minimalist. Having designed a few websites for small start-ups since late 2011, I can almost speak a little HTML/CSS geek and client language now.

My name is Jolene. I am currently studying as a computing student, majoring in e-commerce, based in Singapore. I create simple web pages, photograph people and love to cook for my friends and family.

New in December is my personal website where I share about my passion, health and life with a niche community that I have grown in for the past 3 years. Passion was what that kept me writing, photographing moments and exploring life. It was about discovering the beauty of web and design that allowed these humble dreams to take flight.

What I enjoy doing:
Photography, reading and writing

"When it was over, all I could think about was how the entire notion of oneself, what we are, is just this logical structure, a place to momentarily house all abstractions. It was a time to become conscious, to give form and coherence to the mystery, and I had been a part of that. It was a gift. Life was raging all around me and every moment was magical. I loved all the people, dealing with all the contradictory impulses - that's what I love the most, connecting with the people. Looking back, that's all that really mattered."

December in Hong Kong

Top from HollyHoque, Leggings and Boots from H&M

Sorry for the short break - The site is in a mess, and I've yet to get many other school stuff settled... I wished the holiday could last for as long as I'm ready and happy... It seemed like the whole world went to Hong Kong in December for a holiday, but I loved it nonetheless (Except for the crowd especially during this trip). What made it better was meeting buddy Tsui in Lan Kwai Fong and have talks over a pint of beer (the addict) - I really can't help feeling happy.

There are a few things that you would have to try when you're there - Roasted pigeons, goose, pork, desserts, wonton mee, cha chan tengs, breakfast sets, beef brisket noodles just to name a few of my favorites... We didn't buy much besides shopping for boots, bags and other non-winter related products. Seeing my 2 bffs having fun in Chicago and Orlando makes me want to take the first flight out to Indiana tomorrow and snowboard with Eumi ♥ Distance makes the heart grow fonder - And friends for 14 years indeed.

P.S - And Hebe if you're reading this, please email me at to claim your prize! Your mail somehow bounced back to me :( Kristin I'll get yours out soon! :)

I hope all your Christmas had been lovely ♥

Guest Post from Shinn - Hello Snow!

I was kindly asked to do a guest post by my dear friend Jolene for her blog NEWINDECEMBER which just turned 2 years old! She wanted me to share about my experiences in Lausanne and probably a bit about Christmas. Well, there would be a lot of posts to mention about all these thus I decided to narrow it down to the topic: Snow for this post!

I’ve been in Lausanne, Switzerland for one and a half years already, time really flew past too quickly. I’m now experiencing my second winter of my life, as a Singaporean who experiences the four seasons of hot, very hot, humid and rain. My first experience with snow was just a year ago when I first entered Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne, Switzerland as a direct entry student but at that time, I did not manage to play with snow that much as I expected myself to since I was busy studying! But now that I am getting used to the curriculum, winter time means snow is play and play is snow!

Right now in December, the entire Switzerland becomes fluffy white because… snow is here! I was asked a question by my French professor last week “So.. as a Singaporean, how are you liking snow?” Initially I thought it was a rather weird and abrupt question to ask though relevant since I do not experience winter in Singapore. But again I gave it a second thought, indeed.. I asked myself if I liked snow…

Do you feel the happiness in me as I attempt to do my snow angel? ;)

Snow can be troublesome.. imagine all that slush and wetness by the roadsides. Snow can bring about danger to cars on the roads which is really a worrying issue especially when the school is on a higher altitude than Lausanne.

But snow has brought so so so much magic and happiness in my life.

  • I love playing snow ball fights!

Although I’m always the one aimed at and my snowballs pretty much fail to hit my friends as I plan for them to.

  • I feel so happy for children and their families who enjoy their sledging rides on snowy slopes!

  • I still enjoy taking the beautiful scenery of Switzerland even though snow is just white.

And most importantly, when there’s snow.. it also means Christmas is here and Christmas markets are definitely happening! Time for some Christmas shopping~

One of the nearest Christmas Markets we have from Lausanne is Montreux’s Noel which is a stretch of stalls along Geneva Lake. You have snowglobes, bookmarks, candies

and definitely not missing out on food: Crepes, Churros, Raclette, Saucisse de Veau… the list goes on anyway. I basically settle my dinners at the Christmas markets :)

And with that.. I hope the readers of NEWINDECEMBER and MADEOFBALLOONS will get the chance to see snow one day (if you have not) and continue to appreciate snow in some way or another!

Christmas in 15 days’ time and here’s an early greeting to all:

Xmas bier with the girls

Another favorite time of the year - Lesser time for love, more time for bier at District 10. It's been a while, the odd familiarity where nothing of the old stayed - Those bottles of wine that sat on ceiling-height wooden shelves, chalkboards festive menus and old-school outdoor dining were replaced with a tinge of modern interior design. The night that was made of talks, beer and chocolate roulette, the night that we talked about how Christmas came early - It was the excitement that brewed, and a knitted friendship that was forged.

As we hoist our glasses to welcome the new, we put down the past that was long gone.

P.S : Remember to join the Newindecember Mini Christmas giveaway here! Stay tuned for a guest post from Shinn at madeofballons and Christmas in Lausanne!

My day in words

It doesn’t matter if it rains a lot or just a little today. It feels just right to only sneak back in bed, pour a cup of tea, switch on the telly, forget about the last paper tomorrow and stretch a bit. But this will not do - it's pretty too late. The after exams thoughts have kicked in, and what I have got to do is to breathe and live life a little, only in slow motion.

It's been some time, and I could promise myself a pastry picnic breakfast, penne with sauce plucked from the air with a lot of tomatoes and smoked salmon with tomato bruschetta... Their presence I simply miss. It had been a tough struggle with school, complaints nonetheless, and I worked things out pretty well to say. Now if I were to scribble a list to complete this holidays, I would...

1. Complete e-commerce site designs
2. Have a safe flight to Hong Kong
3. Manage something special in December for you guys ♥

I hope I don't disappoint. Let us pray for better days ahead! Can't you tell I'm getting all excited already...

P.S: I enabled subscription through RSS feeds on the sidebar on the left - which means updates straight to your mailbox! Happiness at its best.

Asian B.Pepper Chicken w/ Pasta

Exam mess is here and I can’t seem to calm myself down – Fact that I over-prepared for an econs paper (which pretty much deserved it by the way) and under-prepared for my 2 other written papers – sends me constant anxiety attacks. But these 2 days will just fly by, and I my next 5 weeks, a well deserved break, and a Christmas vacation. I cannot honestly wait.

November has been a fruitful month despite all the dark clouds looming. Justin’s 22nd birthday just passed in a jiffy, and also marks our first year together since we were friends 5 years ago. My calendar was jam-packed with all the schedules and study plans I have for myself I barely found time for my lack-of-attention boyfriend, and I’m sorry for that. I hope I have made it up and it would be as bleak, at least for the next 2 years to come.

So last Thursday, in the midst of studying for my econs, I scurried to make a home-cooked meal before he returns from work. And it’s always nice to watch the look on his face, the love you return home for – priceless. This dish I call, Asian Style Stir Fried Black Pepper Chicken with Angel-hair Pasta.

See you all, in 2 days :)

Gardens with Dad

Losing steam in my study-streak. 2012 deserves a pretty good closure with a new beginning. It's been more than a month since my dad left again. It's queer how I start to miss him more especially when I grow older. The memories, the affections... Sometimes silent, more often than not, salient.

The last 2 days had been pretty goofy. I had my first bad encounter presenting to a panel of marketing personnels... Despite accomplishing what I've set out to do, this was almost the first time in Uni that I've ever felt so mediocre in front of everyone. For the good and the bad. I gotta get back to work...
