Bangkok again, is amazing. No you don’t get the kind of serenity, zen, peace and quiet like what you’ll get in Krabi. You get ridiculous traffic oozing your way through even if you rent a bike. But getting from one place to another via their metro (skytrain, BTS) is pretty convenient and wouldn’t cost you more than an hour.
Different modes of transportOn days we loved taking taxis because they would cost much lesser than 2 train tickets combined (if you’re blessed with smooth traffic), on days we loved taking their trains just to avoid the peak hour traffic, and on days we loved taking their boat at nearby piers for an experience and everything else.
Armed with a selfie stick (or monopod) and a clip-on fisheye lens from Camera-licious - an online & brick-and-motar store that sells phone gadgets and accessories, it was sufficient to take pretty awesome pictures throughout our trip as posted on our instagram accounts. So we checked into Berkeley Hotel Pratunam for the next 7 days, located right beside Palladium and diagonally across The Platinum Mall. 8 days alone in Bangkok, I’m surprised how we didn’t get tired of being in the city all that time. The pool and gym facilities are pretty amazing (both a must) for a non-budget travel trip this time.
We stopped right at the bustling weekend market of all time, Chatuchak Weekend Market, also known as JJ market. And I happened to catch a Thai girl, doing a stop-motion time lapse in the middle of all that human traffic. I was just picturing the end-results and post-editing in my head :P I found the coconut ice-cream pretty meh, and with small servings, especially since we’ve tried nicer ones in Krabi and off Bangkok when we went for our one-day tour.
There is also the highly raved-about chicken rice in Bangkok, situated in the heart of Pratunam, on the same side of Platinum Mall and right opposite Palladium Shopping Centre. They are known to have 2 stalls - the Pink shirt stall and Green shirt stall. Ju and I tried both stalls for a couple of days since we stayed in Berkeley that was right opposite. Verdict: Pink shirt chicken rice stall defo tastes better. Even their soup tastes nicer. Crunch. The dipping sauce, that is a combination of sweet, spicy yet garlicy, is a must. I believe all the elements that were set on the plate justified for its taste.
It costs about 40baht per pax for a meal, and a drink costs about 15-20baht. That’s 60baht for a decent meal at less than $4!

It was the time when Queen Sirikit was celebrating her birthday over the week, and Bangkok was super crowded with everyone having a national holiday. We wanted to get into The Grand Palace but were dressed inappropriately. The guard told us that if we came back the next day (Queen’s official birthday), all entrance fees would be waived - Free. Gullible and having dressed casually, we believed and returned the next day. There were soooo many people, the entrance was free, but the entrance specifically to The Grand Palace wasn’t, so 500baht per person still had to be charged. We decided not to go as we were swarmed with human traffic and the heat :’(
Visitors must be properly dressed before being allowed entry to the temple. Men must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves (no tank tops. If you’re wearing sandals or flip-flops you must wear socks (in other words, no bare feet.) Women must be similarly modestly dressed. No see-through clothes, bare shoulders, etc.
